All brushes are made using natural hairs for the heads, West Virgina bamboo for the handles, and leather or linen for the hanging straps. The decorative handle wraps are done with waxed Irish Linen threads.  I hand-craft them all in my Harpers Ferry studio, using strong epoxy resins as the adhesive, and with minimal care will provide many years of use in your studio.

White Asian Goat Hair, Brown Horse Tail Hair, White Horse Mane Hair and Broom Corn for a variety of marks and textures when you apply slips and glazes

This goat hair brush is excellent for any medium thin to very thin materials - think terra sigilatta or thin washes of oxides or colors.  It is not a good choice for thick materials as the hair is very soft and absorbent.

This brown horse tail brush is the coarsest hair I use for slip brushes and is best for medium to very thick materials.  It can leave a nice Hakame texture in your slips if wanted and work nicely for thick glazes as well.

These brushes are made form Amish Broom Corn (the millet plant) and are great for leaving strong texture marks in your hakame slip applications.

This Broom Corn Brush is spread into a rake shape with cedar, and sewn with linen thread.  It will leave great strong hakame marks in your slips or glazes, and can be softened a bit to make the shaft more flexible, by soaking it in clean water for 5-10 minutes or so before using.  This is an example brushes vary.

I currently use 3 different hair types for these production brushes.  The "salt and pepper" black/white is from Gray Squirrel, and the beautiful orange hair is from Red Squirrel.  The longer coarser white and brown mix is Eastern White Tail Deer tail - or "BuckTail"  The squirrel hair is quite soft and absorbent and good for thin to medium materials.  The BuckTail is somewhat coarse and works best for medium (think tomato soup) to thick materials.

The hair in the squirrel brushes is the finest I use, and works well with slightly thinner decorating materials like underglazes, stains, oxides, and is also great for inks and watercolors. These squirrel hair brushes do not work well with VERY thick materials like fat slips.

Ringtail used to be one of my favorite "go to" hairs for best brushes - but now costs so much and is so hard to find that they had to become a "specialty" item for me.  The hair is great for thin to medium thickness materials and behaves as well as any brush hair you can buy. They are wonderful for watercolor and ink as well. I am very sad that the hair has become so rare and expensive - sorry!!  These are examples brushes vary.  PLEASE NOTE : At times there are no Ringtails available to me - if this should be the case when you order I will contact you with options - including a full refund for the purchase.

These brushes are made from the tail hair of Stone Marteen - a European weasel family member.  The hair has great quality of resilience and a luxurious supple quality that makes it great for a wide range of medium thickness materials.

These tiny but long detail brushes are made from Ermine tail hair - VERY soft and supple - and are great for tiny thin lines with thin to medium thickness materials

A fine short, plump brush made from fine Sable tail hair with a large reservoir and fine tip.  Great for thin to medium materials.  Sable tails are hard for me to find, these brushes are rare for me to make.

A really great brush for medium to thick materials like slips, glazes, or thicker underglazes.  All the hog brushes are medium sized and will vary slightly from the photo.

The BuckTail hair is fairly coarse and works great with thicker materials like slips and thick glazes.  The hair is quite long and lends itself to long single stroke calligraphic lines  This hair is not very good with very thin materials as it tends to drip easily.
